Day 12
“But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honours me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.”
-Psalm 50:23
What is the first thing you would say to God, every morning when you are awake or start your devotional time with Him? Do you start by singing a familiar song or petitioning Him your list of needs?
In this busy and hurried world of ours, our daily devotional time could be ‘sacrificed’ or cut short because we must get to work on time or some other urgent schedule demand priority.
Yet God calls us to offer him the sacrifice of thanksgiving. This is first mentioned in Leviticus 7 which is a peace offering motivated by thanksgiving.
Like all peace offerings, it is a voluntary offering, that is to say it was not required by the law. It was an expression of gratitude and joy by the worshipper and offered willingly without coercion.
Today, we don’t have to bring to the altar unleavened loaves and wafers, together with loaves of fine flour, all mixed with oil as our sacrifice of thanksgiving. Instead, ‘we are to “continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.” Hebrews 13:15
Sacrifice is then, to set aside time every morning (and evening), to begin with thanksgiving and praise to God out of a heart of joy and gratitude. And as we daily offer Him our sacrifice of thanksgiving we will experience the promise of peace, joy and blessedness in our relationship with Him.
