Lenten Devotion: Who is Jesus to us? (John 7:25-36)
Day 16 – 22 Mar 2025
People in Jesus’ time questioned his identity and tried to figure out who he really was. Some thought he was the Messiah. Some thought he was a prophet. Yet others thought he was the Christ.
Verse 27 tell us: “But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” Although the people of Jerusalem knew that Jesus came from Nazareth but in a deeper sense, they did not know Jesus or the Father.
Who is Jesus to us?
We too can find ourselves wrestling with our knowledge of Christ. This will impact how we truly understand Christ’s identity and mission and ultimately how we respond to Him. To know who Jesus truly is, we need to:
- Recognise Jesus’s True Identity
Jesus is the one that reveals God’s truth. We must realize that Jesus isn’t just a historic figure, a prophet or a teacher. He is God’s Son sent to reveal the God’s word to the world. He represents God’s authority and purpose. - Jesus came with a Divine Purpose
Jesus is the one sent by God to fulfil a specific divine mission. His purpose was not to stay on earth permanently, but to return to the Father after fulfilling the work of salvation through His death and resurrection.
This passage challenges us to understand Jesus’s true identity and reminds us that faith often requires going beyond surface level understanding. It also encourages us to reflect on how we approach Jesus,
Are we open to His message or do we dismiss it because it does not fit to our expectation? Let us pursue to seek a deeper relationship with Christ and to reflect on who Jesus is to us personally.
