What True Freedom Entails

What True Freedom Entails
(Day 7 – 25 Feb 2026)

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

What is freedom?

For some, it may mean the end of school life and the examinations you have had to endure. For others, freedom comes when your boss is away on holiday or on medical leave. Still others experience freedom when they are finally released from debts they have been servicing for years.

In many ways, freedom is often understood as having no limits, no authority, and no restraint.

Yet for followers of Christ, true freedom is something far deeper. It is being set free from the grip of sin so that we may obey Christ and live for God’s kingdom.

The apostle Paul explains this clearly in his letter to the Romans:

“Thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” (Romans 6:17–18)

Christian freedom is not the absence of mastery — it is a change of master. We are freed from slavery to sin so that we may belong to righteousness.

How then should we respond to this freedom in Christ?

Paul urges us to stand firm and guard this freedom by refusing to return to our old bondage. This means not slipping back into the sinful habits, speech, and thought patterns we once indulged in before we knew Christ. To do so would be like a dog returning to its vomit or a washed sow returning to wallow in the mud (2 Peter 2:22).

The season of Lent offers us a sacred opportunity to examine our lives afresh.

  • Have we been careless in our speech or actions?
  • Have we compromised in our relationships?
  • Have we yielded to those persistent sins that easily entangle us?

True freedom means standing firm in the liberty Christ has secured for us — freedom from sin, guilt, and fear. It means refusing to allow anything to cloud our relationship with God.

May we treasure this freedom today, guard it diligently, and walk in obedience to the One who set us free.
