The Work of the Spirit (John 7:37-52)

Lenten Devotion: The Work of the Spirit (John 7:37-52)
Dey 17 – 24 Mar 2025

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:37-38

Jesus is not limiting his invitation to just the Jews. It is for anyone and everyone. Jesus is the source of living water and He gives it freely to all who receive Him. This living water is in fact the Holy Spirit.

According to the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit is God’s gift who brings to us and through us:
• Joy to the downcast
• Hope to the hopeless
• Salvation to the lost
• Power to the weak
• Comfort to the mourning
• Healing to the sick

However, the crowd responded in 4 ways:

  1. The Convinced (v40) – When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the prophet.”
  2. The Contrary (v41-44) – There was a division among the people over Him.
  3. The Confused (v45-46) – The officers were expected by the authorities to arrest Jesus. They were, however, in awe of Jesus and therefore, unable to carry out their orders.
  4. The Contemplative (v47-52) – They were merely considering that Jesus might be who He says He is.

What is your response today?

Christ is “an inexhaustible fountain.” Whoever you are, whatever your past, wherever you are in the present, He invites you to come to Him. Let Christ be your future. And in believing in Him, you will have rivers of living water flowing out from your heart to your benefit and to the blessing of others.

Will you heed the Holy Spirit’s prompting in your heart? If you choose to obey, God’s mighty hand will be at work in your life! So, the next time you feel the nudge of the Holy Spirit, even if in doubt, take the leap of faith!
