Lenten Devotion: The Transformative Power of Christ’s Sacrifice (Romans 5:12-21)
Day 18 – 25 Mar 2025
“But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.” Romans 5:15
As we enter the season of Lent, we are invited to examine our hearts and draw closer to God. The Apostle Paul’s writings remind us of the transformative power of Christ’s sacrifice and the call to live as new creation. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul emphasizes that in Christ, we are made new. Lent is a time to shed the “old self” and embrace the “new life” that Christ offers.
Paul urges us to “put to death” whatever belongs to our earthly nature (Colossians 3:5). During Lent, consider fasting not only from food but also from distractions, negativity, or sin that hinders your spiritual growth.
The cross is also at the centre of Lent. Paul’s words in Galatians remind us that the cross is not only a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice but also a call to die to ourselves and live for Him. During Lent, we are invited to meditate on the depth of Christ’s love and the cost of our redemption.
Finally, Lent is a spiritual journey, much like a race. Paul’s analogy in Philippians encourages us to persevere in our faith, keeping our eyes fixed on Christ. This season is an opportunity to reorient our lives toward God’s calling and to grow in discipline and devotion.
The Apostle Paul’s writings remind us that Lent is not just about giving up something but about drawing nearer to Christ. It’s a time to reflect on His sacrifice, repent of our sins, and renew our commitment to live as His disciples. As you journey through Lent, may you experience the transforming power of God’s love and grace.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1
