Spur One Another On
(Day 26 – 19 Mar, Thu)
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25
The Boston Marathon is one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. Runners must first qualify by completing another marathon within strict timing requirements before they can earn a place in the race.
During the 2025 Boston Marathon, while many elite runners pushed themselves to achieve their personal bests, one runner, Pedro Arieta, slowed to a halt just 200 metres before the finish line. Another runner had collapsed from exhaustion and was struggling to get back on his feet. Pedro stopped, lifted him up, and walked with him toward the finish line amid cheers from the spectators. Later, Pedro shared in an Instagram post that although he lost a few minutes, he was glad because God had used him to bless a fellow runner.
Pedro was content knowing that he had already earned his place in the Boston Marathon. He did not need to prove himself further in that moment, and so he was free to care for someone else.
In a similar way, Hebrews 10:19–25 reminds us that through Jesus we have full assurance of our acceptance into God’s kingdom. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we can draw near to God with confidence. And as we journey together in faith, we are called to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
In the race of life, we already share in Christ’s victory. We do not need to run in anxiety or competition with one another. Instead, we can focus on drawing near to God and lifting up those around us who may be weary along the way.
Thanks and praise be to God for this liberating truth.
