Run to the Great High Priest

Run to the Great High Priest
(Day 21 – 13 March 2026)

“For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God… Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:18–19, 25

Before reading this passage, I had not deeply considered what sets the earthly priests apart from Jesus. In ancient Israel, priests carried enormous responsibility. They stood between a holy God and sinful people, offering animal sacrifices where blood was shed and rituals were performed carefully and repeatedly.

The temple had a curtain that separated the main sanctuary from the Holy of Holies, where only the high priest was allowed to enter. Even then, he could enter only once a year. Yet the high priest himself was imperfect—he needed forgiveness too—and his ministry would end when his life ended.

Reflecting on this, I realise how different that system was from what we often assume today. Hebrews tells us that Jesus is our Great High Priest, but not in the same fragile and temporary way. He replaces the old priesthood and stands for us in the true Holy of Holies. When He died, the curtain—symbolic of the barrier between God and humanity—was torn. Unlike earthly priests, Jesus reigns forever because He lives eternally.

This truth changes how I see my own failures. It reminds me that hiding from God is never the answer—repentance is. Sometimes I feel ashamed and try to fix myself before coming back to God, as if the curtain is still standing between us. But knowing that Jesus is our Great High Priest gives deep reassurance. My standing before God does not fluctuate with my daily successes or failures.

So today, let us not live as though the curtain still stands. Instead, let us run to our Great High Priest with confidence and gratitude, trusting Him to complete the work He has begun in us.
