Light of the World (John 8:12–30)

Lenten Devotion: Light of the World (John 8:12–30)
Day 19 – 26 Mar 2025

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

I am thankful that Jesus is the light of the world. He is also the light of my world. In my work, when I have asked my client all the questions that I can think of but am still “in the dark”, I ask God for help.

And as I obediently ask the question that God tells me to (no matter how random or repeated the question may be), the client speaks so much that I can understand him better and identify his need. Praise the Lord!

As I continue to follow Jesus in this way, I will never be in darkness. This can be the same for you too!

How then can we be Christ’s light to others?

Verse 30 tells us: “Even as Jesus spoke, many believed in him.”

  • What did Jesus say to these people that made them believe in Him?
  • Will others also believe in Jesus when as we speak?

Let’s first take a look at what Jesus did.

  1. Jesus told the people that the Father is trustworthy (v16)
  2. Jesus tells the world all that he heard from the Father (v28)
  3. Jesus declares that the Father is always with him (v29)

We can learn from Jesus’ example to tell others that God is trustworthy. This may obvious to us but it is very helpful to our listeners.

We are also reminded “to do nothing on our own” but to “speak just what the Father has taught.” Let us remember to listen to the Father first before we speak with others. There is much wisdom and life in God’s word.

God also assures us that he will not leave us alone. What a re-assurance! With this solid backing from the Father, let us always do what pleases the Father.

We can all shine Christ’s light to the world by learning from Jesus’ example. Very soon, the darkness of this world will be dispelled by Jesus, the light of the world. There will be no more darkness!
