Lenten Devotion – Jesus Paid It All
Day 2, 15 February 2024
“For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” Galatians 2:19-21
Have you been to Haw Par Villa? It was one of the places that parents would bring their children to visit in the 1980s. My parents would bring me to the Hell’s Museum in there and warn me to behave well and do good deeds or else I would be thrown into hell! That place never failed to scare me as a child wherever I visited.
Our God loves us and sent his only son to die on the cross for us. Our salvation and righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not by observing the law. Our righteousness before God is not earned through our own efforts but it is a gift of God’s grace.
Let us walk in humility, acknowledging our dependence on Him for salvation and sanctification. May we extend this same grace to others, recognising that we are all recipients of God’s unmerited favour, because Jesus had already paid it all. For “if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.” (Galatians 2:21)
Let us fix our eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. May we rejoice and live each day in gratitude for the grace that has been given freely to us.
