Jesus Paid It All

Jesus Paid It All
Day 38 – 2 Apr (Maundy Thursday)

Leviticus 16:2–24 describes the Day of Atonement, revealing both the holiness of God and the need for a mediator between God and humanity. On that day, Aaron entered the Holy of Holies with blood to make atonement for the sins of the Israelites. At the same time, the scapegoat symbolically carried their sins away:

“He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the wilderness… The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a remote place.” Leviticus 16:21–22

This powerful image points to the complete removal of sin and the cleansing of God’s people.

I was reminded of this during a family trip to Penang last year. We rented a car, and I had the privilege of driving. However, the car was much larger than what I was used to in Singapore, and the carparks were significantly narrower. One morning, while exiting a multi-storey carpark, I misjudged a turn and scraped the side of the car against a wall divider.

I panicked. It was my first accident—and worse still, it involved a rental car that I was expected to return in good condition. I immediately began to worry about the cost.

In that moment, my dad responded with calm reassurance. Though disappointed by the damage, he reminded me that what mattered most was that we were safe. Then he said something I will never forget: whatever the cost of the damage, he would bear it in full.

That act of sacrificial love reminded me of what Christ has done for us. Just as my dad took on the cost of my mistake, Jesus bore the full price of our sin on the cross. He is both our scapegoat and our saviour—the one who not only pays for our sin but also removes our guilt and shame.

Jesus has fully paid the price for our sins, and He desires for us to walk in the freedom He has secured for us.
