Lenten Devotion – God wants Others to be Part of His Family
Day 2 – 6 Mar 2025
A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) John 4:7-9
In our lives, we often discriminate against others due to their disability, ethnicity, or gender.
I, for one, have definitely done so to others in church or school, leading them to lock themselves away. We fail to see the purpose of showing hospitality, but from this passage, we see God’s love for every single one of us.
In the passage, Jesus broke through the barrier of suspicion and hate between Jews and Samaritans and saw a person in need of satisfaction undiscoverable on this earth, only available through Him. He did not judge her for her background nor the wrongs she had committed but extended mercy to her.
How can we emulate Jesus’ example in our daily life?
Here’s a challenge: identify a newcomer whom you may judge for his or her looks or background in 3 days’ time (Sunday). Make the effort to connect with him after service and engage him in a conversation. Introduce yourself to him and invite him to join you for lunch.
Now you may be thinking, “I don’t think I can do it, I have to send my kids somewhere / I have homework to do / I need to meet someone …”
Erase those thoughts, and remember that God does not judge a book by its cover or contents but wants everyone to be a part of His family. Let’s make those around us feel our heartwarming hospitality!
