DO NOT BE AFRAID

Dear COA Family,

The Gospel of Matthew records an unusual account of Jesus in a boat calming
a storm after being awoken by His disciples.

The first question He asked them after being awoken was “Why are you afraid,
O you of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26).

To the disciples (and many of us), this question would have sounded strange.
After all, wouldn’t any sane person be afraid in a storm that threatened their
lives? Even seasoned sailors like the disciples recognised extreme danger when
they saw it.

Yet Jesus seemed to be teaching His disciples a greater lesson. Because He was
in the boat with them, they would be safe. It did not matter how severe the storm
was, Jesus would keep them safe. They did not need to be afraid.

To prove His point, Jesus simply stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea
just like a pet owner would do to his pet dog who was misbehaving. Immediately,
there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed at how powerful and
authoritative Jesus was (Matthew 8:27).

I believe that the Lord is similarly teaching us to adopt a heavenly perspective like
the disciples in the midst of trials, sufferings and troubles which we face. While it
may seem logical and reasonable for us to be afraid, feel sad or discouraged by
the adverse circumstances, we are called to rest on the assurance that Jesus is
with us through the storms. And if Jesus is with us, we are safe no matter the
conditions.

Not only will our Lord keep us safe, He is also sovereign over every situation. He will
bring his good out of our trials. His promise is that He will work for good in all things,
whether good or bad (Romans 8:28). We can fully trust in His keeping power and
His good will for our lives.

So, are you facing a “storm” that threatens to overwhelm you? Continue to look to
the Lord and trust in His protection and leading. He will lead you to green pastures
and quiet waters through the storm!

God bless,
Revd Ian
