Lenten Devotion: Christ’s Light Shines Through the Gloom (Luke 22:54-71)
Day 37 – 16 Apr 2025
“Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” Luke 22:61
It was not too long ago that Peter had confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and Jesus had immediately pointed out to Peter that it was God the Father who had revealed it to him (Matthew 16:15-17). One would have imagined that with this extraordinary experience and having walked closely with Jesus, Peter would never ever deny Him. But this was not to be.
When it came to the crunch, Peter, one of the most ardent disciples of Christ, denied Him three times. It was even more devastating for Peter when he saw Christ looking at him as the rooster crowed, as foretold by the Lord. It dawned on Peter that even though Jesus had deemed him to be the rock on which He would build His church (Matt 16:18), he was as weak and vulnerable as any man.
Brought before the council of the chief priests and scribes, Jesus was mocked, humiliated, blasphemed, and beaten. It’s unthinkable that the Son of God would enter this world in our human nature and be so downtrodden by those in power. Our devotional passage today shows clearly how depraved we are and totally unworthy of God’s love. If it were not for His grace bestowed upon us, we would be lost eternally.
In the midst of all the gloom and doom, light shines through. Jesus said, “But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” (Lk 22:69) Once again, Jesus declares His victorious position and God’s sovereignty, no matter what men may do.
In this season of Lent, whatever our individual circumstances may be, let us humbly look to Jesus who is seated at God’s right hand. He knows all our weaknesses and struggles that we’re facing. In Him lies our eternal hope, and with His almighty enabling, we shall overcome.
