Be Intentional in Expressing Love (John 12:1-11)

Lenten Devotion: Be Intentional in Expressing Love (John 12:1-11)
Day 31 – 9 Apr 2025

“You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” John 12:8

As I read John 12:1-11, I am moved by the profound act of love and devotion displayed by Mary when she anoints Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume. Her action underscores the importance of expressing our love and appreciation for those who have impacted our lives.

For me, Mary’s act of pouring out such costly perfume serves as a reminder of what it means to give freely and without reservation. In our often busy lives, it’s easy to take our relationships for granted or to hold back our expressions of love, especially when it feels inconvenient. But Mary’s willingness to be vulnerable in her devotion teaches me that true love often involves sacrifice and humility.

In my own life, I try to remember the importance of cherishing the people I care about. I am trying to make a conscious effort to express my gratitude—whether it’s through small gestures like a text message or simply spending quality time with loved ones.

Additionally, the reaction of Judas cause me to see the dangers of valuing money and status over genuine love. It prompts me to reflect on my priorities. Am I sometimes too focused on what seems practical or resourceful, rather than embracing a spirit of generosity and selflessness?

Ultimately, John 12 reminds me that love is a very powerful tool when it is given freely and passionately. It definitely helps me to embrace the call to love beyond limitations, just like Mary.

During this Lent season, as I read through all the testimonies, I am truly touched by the heartfelt sharing from my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Each testimony reflects a unique journey, filled with moments of vulnerability and strength.

As we continue through this Lenten journey together, may we all find encouragement in each other’s stories and draw closer to God’s grace and love. Let’s challenge ourselves this week to express gratitude and love in tangible ways, honoring those who have touched our lives.
