The Importance of Growing in Faith
Day 29 – 23 Mar (Mon)
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:17-19
Hebrews 11:17–31 presents faith not as a vague belief, but as a living trust expressed through decisive obedience. From Abraham, who trusted God when asked to offer Isaac—believing that God could still fulfill His promise—to Rahab, who risked her life to shelter the spies, entrusting herself to a God she had only heard about, we see that the faith of these men and women was not formed in a single dramatic moment. Rather, it was cultivated through daily trust, so that when the critical moment came, they acted according to God’s will.
Faith, as Hebrews teaches, is “being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” It is confidence anchored in God’s Word rather than in visible outcomes. These examples remind us that faith must remain active—it is never static. The Chinese idiom 不进则退 (if we do not move forward, we fall behind) is fitting here: if our faith is not being strengthened, it will weaken.
How, then, do we continue to build our faith?
Scripture points us to a rhythm of meditating on God’s Word, prayer, and thanksgiving. Meditating on His Word sharpens and strengthens our faith, enabling us to walk in step with the Holy Spirit and to do God’s work. Through prayer and petition, we bring our needs honestly before Him and learn to rely on Him. With thanksgiving, we remember His past faithfulness—gratitude strengthens trust, and trust deepens obedience.
As we respond to the Lord in small, daily acts of obedience, our hearts become steady and attentive to His leading. In time, like those in Hebrews 11, our living faith will equip us to act courageously according to His will at crucial turning points.
Let us therefore encourage one another to nurture our faith in the Lord—regularly and intentionally.
