Stop Sinning
(Day 27 – 20 March, Fri)
“For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment.” Hebrews 10:26–27
The message is clear: we are called to live holy and faithful lives, turning away from sin.
From time to time, we hear of prominent individuals who fall into serious sin. Though they may have professed faith through their words and teachings, their actions brought pain and shame not only to themselves but also to their families and loved ones. Even if such sins remain hidden from others, they are never hidden from God. Without repentance, there remains the sobering reality of judgment.
Yet we must not think that such failures happen only to others. All of us are vulnerable. No one is beyond temptation. Therefore, it is crucial that we live not only with professed faith but with genuine obedience—choosing what is right in thought, word, and deed before God.
Romans 7:25 reminds us that there is a struggle within us. In our natural, sinful condition, we are inclined toward wrongdoing. We all face the pull to lie, to compromise, or to act in self-interest. This is why we must daily submit ourselves to God and resist the devil, so that we do not fall into temptation. Jesus Himself taught us to seek forgiveness regularly: “forgive us our sins… and lead us not into temptation.” (Luke 11:4)
Many years ago, in a conversation with my son Zhengqin, I remarked that we should always trust God. He responded that we must also obey God. His words reminded me of the familiar chorus: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
This truth is echoed by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in The Cost of Discipleship, where he writes: “Only he who believes is obedient, and only he who is obedient believes.”
Faith and obedience cannot be separated. To truly believe is to live according to God’s will and to turn away from sin. No matter our circumstances or how difficult the challenges may be, we are called to persevere in doing what is right. There is no room for compromise.
Let us therefore encourage one another to stay faithful to God and obey his will. “But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.” Hebrews 10:39
