Authentic Worship

Authentic Worship
(Day 23 – 16 Mar, Mon)

This morning, I would like to share my thoughts on Hebrews 9:1–14.

To be honest, when I first read this passage, I felt quite confused about what it was trying to say. So I did some reading and looked up some explanations to help me understand it better. Here is my simple summary of what I discovered.

Hebrews 9:1–14 explains that the tabernacle and the sacrifices under the old covenant were symbolic but temporary. These forms of worship could not fully cleanse the conscience of those who came to worship the Lord. People brought offerings such as animal sacrifices and followed various purification rituals, but these outward acts were unable to deal completely with the inner problem of sin.

The passage also describes the tabernacle in great detail, with many specific rules and regulations. These rituals were carried out carefully to create a sacred space where people could encounter God. The tabernacle was meant to be a place where people sincerely worshipped the Lord and brought their offerings before Him.

However, when we look at the many detailed rules, it can sometimes seem as if people were simply following routines—doing what they had to do rather than worshipping from the heart.

The tabernacle also had strict limitations. Only the high priest was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place, and even then only once a year. He entered with the blood of a sacrifice, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. The other priests served in the outer room, continuing their daily ministry.

Hebrews 9:8–10 explains that these arrangements showed that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been fully opened while the first tabernacle was still in use. The sacrifices and gifts offered could not completely cleanse the conscience of the worshipper. They were external regulations—ceremonial practices that pointed forward to something greater that was yet to come.

And here is the good news.

God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. Through His sacrifice, the barrier between God and humanity was removed. Jesus entered the Most Holy Place not with the blood of goats or calves, but with His own blood, securing eternal redemption for us.

Hebrews 9:14 says: “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!”

Because of what Jesus has done, we are able to come before God not only outwardly, but also inwardly with sincere hearts. We no longer rely on sacrifices or rituals to cleanse our conscience. Instead, Christ’s sacrifice has already made the way for us to draw near to God.

Through the Holy Spirit, God now guides us to live wisely and faithfully as we serve Him.

So Hebrews 9:1–14 reminds us not to rely on outward or insincere actions, but to worship God with sincerity in our words, our thoughts, and our actions.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to reflect on and share about this passage, and I hope that it has encouraged you as much as it has encouraged me.
