Finding Rest in God
(Day 16 – 7 March, Sat)
What does rest truly mean?
In a world and society filled with busyness—from the moment we enter the education system in Singapore, to stepping into the workforce, and eventually raising a family—rest often feels like a luxury we cannot afford.
Life moves quickly as we have deadlines, responsibilities, expectations, and goals to meets. Even when our bodies rest, our minds rarely do.
Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith speaks about different types of rest: physical, mental, emotional, social, sensory, creative, and spiritual. While each of these are relevant, Hebrews 4:9–10 reminds us of something deeper:
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His.”
God-defined rest is not simply taking a break. It is a spiritual stance. It requires us to cease our efforts in striving for salvation and trusting fully in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Just as God rested on the seventh day, we are invited to rest in what He has already completed.
This means letting go of the need to prove ourselves. It means releasing the constant pressure to achieve more to be enough. In a society that glorifies productivity and achievements, this is not easy. I must confess that I am often caught up in this striving to do and achieve more.
In fact, it took me some time to sit down and write this devotion because of the many tasks waiting to be done.
Yet I am thankful for the gentle reminder from God’s Word. Rest in Him is not about neglecting responsibility, but about shifting our trust. It is choosing faith over self-reliance. It is having the quiet confidence that God is enough and that His work is greater than ours.
May God continue to remind us to stop striving and start trusting. May He guide us into His rest—a place of peace, faith, and assurance in Him.
