Dear COA Family,
Just this past week, I visited Marissa Lee, who at the age of one week is the youngest member of our church. She is the most adorable child and is the second daughter of Kang Wei and Lydia. Praise God for her safe delivery and continued protection and provision for the family.
As I was carrying her in my arms, I was reminded of David’s prayer to God in Psalms 131:
“My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.” (Psalm 131:1-2)
Seeing Marissa contentedly nestled in Lydia’s arms, the picture of how the Lord carries us in a similarly loving and protective manner is brought out clearly. Psalm 68:19 tells us, “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily carries us in his arms.” (NLT) The idea that the Lord carries us constantly is regularly brought out in Scripture.
The main question is: Are we willing to rest contentedly in his arms?
Some people would rather strive anxiously to ensure their livelihood is secure. They work hard to build up their savings and a substantial retirement nest egg. Their trust is in no one else but themselves. They find it hard to trust God to provide for them.
Others measure their significance and self-worth by their achievements. A regular, adequately paying job is insufficient for them. They must be recognised and acknowledged by others as someone special. As a result, they are never content with their current state.
A person who is like a weaned child with its mother is, on the other hand, a trusting and secure person. He rests in the Lord for all of his needs and is rarely in a state of anxiety. He finds his significance and self-worth in what the Scriptures say of him.
He is not overly affected by the opinions of others nor overly distressed by the circumstances he faces.
He is calm and rested in his spirit, content and grateful in his heart towards the Lord, even though he may be busily engaged in activities of family, work, and ministry.
Most of all, a person who is like a weaned child looks forward to life each day with hope. Knowing that the Lord guides him daily, he can face every challenge with confidence that the Lord will strengthen him. Furthermore, the Lord will bring his perfect will and purpose for the person’s life, even if it means going through adversity.
Let us be like the weaned child, trusting and content in the arms of the Lord daily.
God bless,
Revd Ian
