Trust in God’s Sovereignty and Divine Purpose (John 11:45-57)

Lenten Devotion: Trust in God’s Sovereignty and Divine Purpose (John 11:45-57)
Day 30 – 8 Apr 2025

“Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” John 11:50

Many came to faith in Jesus when they witnessed him raising Lazarus from the dead. Yet there were also those who continued to disbelieve and oppose him. Even Caiaphas, the high priest, plotted to kill Jesus.

Unknown to them however, Caiaphas was actually prophesying about Jesus’ sacrificial death for the whole nation. In God’s sovereign will, God has determined that Christ’s death will result in the salvation of the whole world (John 3:16). God’s purpose was not derailed by wicked people!

This passage ultimately tells us that God can use anyone or any situation to accomplish his will and divine plan. God is sovereign and his timing is perfect!

Have you ever asked why do bad situations happen to you or where is God? Do not despair, for God knows all of our burdens, fears and desires.

Many years ago, I experienced a personal grievous situation in my life. That situation helped me to reflect and recalibrate my life, and resulted in my decision to get baptized and join the church. I learned immensely through that painful episode and now looking back, I am profoundly thankful to God for allowing me to go through that invaluable albeit broken-hearted experience. Most importantly, through it all, God has led and guided me back to be closer to Him and know his gentle love, amazing grace and generous mercy.

And now, I am fully convinced that God is fully capable of transforming any person or turn a bad or challenging situation around, in accordance with His will and precise timing. What we need to do is respond in belief and trust, obedience and submission, and continue to keep faith in Him.

Gracious Lord Jesus, we pray that by your grace you will inspire each one of us who call ourselves Christian to ever greater belief, assurance of faith, willingness to serve in your name, and enthusiasm to go and tell others who you are. This is so that many will believe in you and be saved. Amen.
