Lenten Devotion: Why I Follow Jesus (John 10:11-21)
Day 25 – 2 Apr 2025
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:14-15
I follow Jesus because he is the Good Shepherd.
In John 10:11-13, Jesus contrasts himself with the hired hand, showing that he truly cares for his flock. Unlike those who flee in times of trouble, he will never abandon us. He promised to always be there, even in our most challenging moments. He will never abandon me.
I follow Jesus because he is the Good Shepherd.
In John 10:14-18, Jesus reveals the depth of his love for us. He doesn’t just lead us—he goes to great lengths to help us, even to the point of laying down His life. He willingly sacrificed himself for my sins, performing the ultimate act of love.
I follow Jesus because he is the Good Shepherd.
In John 10:18, Jesus demonstrates His divine authority. He was not a victim of circumstance nor was his sacrifice an accident. He was commissioned by the Father and he willingly embraced the path set before Him.
When I reflect on my journey to Christianity, I am reminded of the foundation laid during my Catholic education. I was blessed to be surrounded by Christians who lovingly brought me to church during Christmas and Easter, planting the seed of Jesus in my heart.
As life unfolded, circumstances and shifting priorities led me down different paths. I became a lost sheep, wandering far from him. But, like the Good Shepherd he is, Jesus never left me. He was always there, calling me back, warning me when I veered into darkness. Time and again, in my lowest moments, he guided me back to the right path. Even when I whispered prayers as I passed by a church, he responded by sending His people into my life. In countless ways, he extended his hand to lift me up, reminding me, “My sheep, I was, I am and I will always be here for you.”
That’s how Jesus led me—through my family, back into the flock, and away from dangerous places. Each day, I thank the Lord for being the Good Shepherd who never abandoned his sheep. He has always been faithful to me, and for that, I am forever grateful.
