Lenten Devotion: Living Fearlessly (John 8:48-59)
Day 21 – 28 Mar 2025
“Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” John 8:51
As a child, I feared being scolded. As a young adult, living and working in a different country, I feared loneliness. As I grew older and the people around me were ageing, I feared death.
Death was taking away people who were dear to me. The fear when my father was dying would have been unbearable if not for the Lord’s promise. In my time of most fervent prayers, I was reminded that as believers who abide in Christ, we will never see death. Being erased from the Earth is okay when there is life beyond. When that idea fully settled in my heart, that fear—and all lesser fears—melted away.
Phil Wickham’s song, Living Hope, gives us such encouragement:
Out of the silence, the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Hallelujah, praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me
Lord, today I lift up all who experience fear that they may triumph over those fears as they are carried by Your grace, assurance and love. In Jesus name. Amen.
